The Indigenous Pavilion at ASSW 2027 will continue the growing tradition of creating a dedicated space for gathering, dialogue, and knowledge exchange led by Indigenous Peoples from across the Arctic and beyond. Building on the foundations established at ASSW 2025 in Boulder and ASSW 2026 in Aarhus, the 2027 Pavilion in Hakodate will offer a welcoming environment that centers Indigenous perspectives, relational approaches, and diverse ways of knowing.
The Pavilion is envisioned as a place where participants can connect and engage in meaningful conversations across disciplines, cultures, and experiences. Through both structured activities and informal encounters, the space will support reflection, creativity, and community-building throughout the Summit.
The program is shaped by Indigenous scholars to celebrate Arctic Indigenous Peoples and their cultures, share knowledge, and develop a research agenda aligned with Arctic Indigenous values. It invites not only Indigenous scholars and their allies, but also Indigenous knowledge holders of all age groups and artists who carry culturally grounded ways of knowledge sharing, as well as Permanent Participants of the Arctic Council and other rightsholders, to advance knowledge self-determination for the Arctic. In particular, it has included morning ceremonies, Indigenous caucus meetings, artists talks, talking circles, films, exhibitions and performances, while welcoming other ways of Indigenous-led knowledge sharing and co-creation.
The Indigenous Pavilion Program for ASSW 2027 will include:
- A gathering space for consultation, dialogue, cultural exchange, and shared learning
- Indigenous caucus meetings for knowledge, stake-, and rights holders
- Artistic and creative showcases highlighting Indigenous storytelling and expression
- Film screenings featuring Indigenous perspectives from the Arctic and related regions
- Morning openings or blessings led by Indigenous knowledge holders
- Opportunities for students, researchers, and community members to meet, collaborate, and learn together
- Open sessions for conversation and reflection, as well as selected closed sessions for Indigenous participants and invited guests
The full program of the Indigenous Pavilion at ASSW 2027 will be available in the main ASSW program once published.
We welcome all ASSW participants to spend time in the Pavilion—whether to join scheduled activities, meet others, or simply be present in a space grounded in respect, reciprocity, and shared curiosity.
